Information for Participants

Thank you for participating in this field test of COVID-19-related science lessons developed by Baylor College of Medicine. The COVID HACKS lessons provide age-appropriate, scientifically accurate content to children, and are aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for each grade. Teachers in the field test will be asked to teach two lessons to their students: one on COVID-19 Basic Information and Prevention, and one on Infectious Diseases.

Any Houston-area teacher in grades 3, 7 or 9-10 (Biology) is eligible to apply. All participating teachers will teach the unit in person or online and will receive teaching materials for up to 24 students (if you would like to involve more students, please contact us to make special arrangements). Most of the activities include electronic handouts or slides to use with students. Sufficient supplies will be provided as needed to enable students to work individually. Each teacher will administer pre- and post-content knowledge surveys to their students and provide feedback on the quality of the activities.

All information collected for this study will be gathered without identifiers that can be linked to any individual. Once the project is complete, no teacher or student data will be able to be connected back to any individual, classroom or school. No results will be reported to any schools or school districts, and any information reported or published in peer-reviewed journals will be presented as aggregated data without any identifiers.

This human subjects research project has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board of Baylor College of Medicine and Affiliated Hospitals, as described in protocol number H-49543. There are no potential risks for any study subject beyond those encountered by any student or teacher every school day, while engaged in normal school-based activities. Student participation in the lessons and assessments is voluntary, and that there is no penalty for opting out. All participants are free to leave the study at any time.

Thank you again for your participation in this project. We hope you find the experience enjoyable and beneficial.
